Retired Pennsylvania State Senator Michael L. Waugh (58 years old) passed away October 8, 2014 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Mike was a Life Member of the Glen Rock Hose & Ladder Company, awarded at our recent Appreciation Banquet in March, 2014 for his four decades of Public Service. Mike made many contributions to his community and the Fire Service both as a Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician and Chief Officer of several Fire Departments. Mike continued that public service as an elected official, first as a Supervisor for Shrewsbury Township, then as a State Representative (1993-1998) and Senator (1999- January 2014). He was currently serving as the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Before his elected career, Mike help run his family’s successful construction business. One of Mike’s greatest accomplishments as an elected official was as a main sponsor of the State Building Code. He used is construction industry background and his fire service experience to shepherd the bill through the State House and Senate to insure that all new construction would be built to modern life safety and health standards. Before the bill’s passage, something as basic as smoke detectors were not required in all new homes statewide. Mike was also a successful farmer and an outdoorsman and an active member of many community service and business organizations. He always greeted you with a smile and a handshake and was always willing to listen to his constituent’s problems and work towards a solution. Mike was truly a valued and respected public servant.
